Review of Disc Golf

Posted by Darleya

Not a lot of people know about disc golf. At least not in Canada.

I’ve been playing disc golf for around 4 years now. Disc golf is a sport that is incredibly fun, easy to try, yet a challenge to master.

The game essentially resembles golf but with frisbees and chained baskets. There are courses of either 9 or 18 baskets. Typically these courses can be found in school yards or official disc golf courses. In Orleans, near Ottawa, there is a 9-basket disc golf course behind the school in Gardenway Park. The nearest 18-basket disc golf course is on the Grounds of Camp Fortune, and a member of the Ottawa Disc Golf Club. Yeah, there’s a club.

The goal of the sport is to toss the discus(or frisbee) from a distance towards the metal framed baskets that have vertical chains. You want to get your frisbeeĀ into the basket in the fewest tosses possible. Typically, the baskets are designatedasĀ either par 3, 4, or 5, but, depending on the course, it varies. The frisbees are made with a special rubber plastic, different than your regular frisbee. They are smaller in diameter and vary in weights and depths depending on the particular frisbee’s distance designation.

For instance you can have a driver discus, a putter discus, or a mid-range discus; among others. There are also discs that are meant to function for all distances.

The people that are really hooked on disc golf can spend a lot of money on these discs as they vary in prices and qualities significantly. We own around 10 different kinds; yet I always stick to my favourite, an all-purpose discus. There’s a store in Kanata called The Ultimate Disc Golf Store. Check it out! There are really funky discs that can have cool designs and logos on them.

I really love disc golf because it’s different, is a sport where I’m on par with the guys, and is played in the great outdoors. It can strengthen your arm and shoulder, but it isn’t a strenuous sport. Anyone,be they young or old; can play. If you’re interested in the sport but don’t know where a course is in your area, then just do a general google search. There are many forums out there, such as this one in Ottawa, that discus of various disc golf courses, and are basically communities, but for disc golfers.

Enjoy!

  1. I also like it because you can play it outside in the heat and it’s not so intense that I’m sweating through my shirt. TMI, I know.

  2. Nice review! In the states we call it Frisbee Golf, but I’ve never played it because I’m not a fan of being out when the sun is shining. P.S. I love the banners you’ve made for this site!

  4. I am kind of a vampire. I’ve worked the night shift since 1986 and hate the daytime.
