Review of Dempster’s OvenFresh Multigrain and White Baguettes

Posted by Darleya

Dempster’s has come up with a new line of bread, that includes baguettes and dinner rolls, which can be baked in only 8 minutes.

The trick of these breads is that they’re not fully cooked, and come in a vacuum sealed packaging which gives them an extended shelf life without preservatives or the need to freeze, or even refrigerate. It’s an odd packaging, because it doesn’t look vacuum sealed, but certainly is because no air could escape, and the uncooked bread was moist and fresh. (I hate the word moist, but I wasn’t about to call it clammy, damp, or dewy.)

The premise is that you get to enjoy warm fresh white or multigrain baguettes at anytime.

I got the bread at the very beginning of March, and the expiry dates on the baguettes I bought are April 20th, 2010. This is a significant span for something found in the bakery aisle. This could be perfect for having around the house for a bit in case you have unexpected dinner guests.

I tried both the Multigrain and the White baguettes, with Laurier cheese, butter, and on their own. You know, to really make sure they’re good in all respects! I followed the instructions exactly, which were to simply heat your oven at 400F, and bake for 8 minutes directly on the rack.

When the time was up, I was a little skeptical because I thought they looked maybe a tad too crispy.

I broke out my crumb keeper bread cutting board and knife and cut them up in nice little slices. To my surprise, the inside of the bread was incredibly soft and moist. The outer crust was crispy, but not too crispy at all, and in fact much softer than the baguettes you buy fresh.

The bread was delicious. Both the multigrain and the white baguette was incredibly fresh and warm, right out of the oven. The multigrain is of top quality, you can see the sunflower seeds and other grains on it. A very nice treat. The butter and the white baguette give you that ultimate guilty flavour. Mmm butter.
Both breads tasted great on their own, the multigrain tasting healthier, of course. Don’t get me started on the Laurier cheese, I’ll leave that for its own review.

I really liked these breads, and I’m definitely going to try their dinner rolls as well. The bonus you get with these baguettes instead of buying the fresh ones, are the extended shelf life, and the fact that you get to enjoy a fresh out of the oven taste. There’s nothing like warm bread. Mmmmm.

The baguettes are sold in packages of two, for around $3.49 each and can now be found at most grocery stores here in Canada. (The dinner rolls come in packages of 6 for the same price) I’m not certain if Dempsters, a Maple Leaf company, sells products in the US or not.
