Mascara, a Brand War
There are many brands and varieties of Mascara out there and I think I’ve practically tried them all. In this Brand War, I’m going to compare three of them at various price ranges. The first is CoverGirl’s Lash Blast mascara, the second is Kiss Me Mascara, and the third is Christian Dior’s DiorShow Blackout.
I’ll admit that what first attracted me to this mascara was the bright orange oblong tube. In addition, it has a new type of brush that is rubbery and also orange. The tube is sold with a lid and the brush aside from it. The point of this is to show off the orange rubber bristles. After you use the mascara, there is no point to having the lid. This mascara promises to create a volumizing look. Now I’ve got very straight, and short lashes which I need to first curl before applying my mascara. What I liked about this mascara is that it separated my lashes quite nicely without any clumps. It didn’t seem to give me that really full lash look that I want, but with a second coat, it offers a pretty decent volume. As a waterproof mascara, it came off quite easily with my Neutrogena Oil-free makeup remover. In the shower, however, I got large black circles of mascara still on my face after washing it.
I found Kiss Me Mascara at Shoppers Drug Mart. It was the first mascara to develop the new tubing technology. The mascara forms a tube of sorts around each individual lash for added volume and length. The mascara came in a metal burgundy container but I never really used the metal container after I opened it. When applying this mascara, you can’t really notice the different technology, but it covered my lashes very nicely. You notice the difference with this mascara when you’re washing your face. You have to actually crumble your lashes with your fingers, to remove it. It comes off in little teflon-like pieces. You don’t get a mess on your face in the shower. I had fun crumbling my lashes like that, because you can feel it all come off. It sort of makes it interesting. It does require extra time in the shower though, since you have to take the time to crumble them fully. I used this mascara for a good six months, then grew tired of always crumbling. But, you can actually crumble it off without any water if you want to,just be careful not to take off your lashes. Make-up remover is not needed for this mascara. I can’t remember the exact cost, but I believe it was around $23.
Christian’s Dior’s DiorShow mascara line can be found in either waterproof or non-waterproof versions. The one I’m reviewing is the non-waterproof DiorShow Blackout. The very deepest of blacks. This mascara gave me the full dramatic eyelashes that I seek. With straight short lashes, this mascara was truly capable of giving me the longer full lashes that I want. It brushes through my lashes quite nicely, and doesn’t clump. The color is so very black, it’s perfect. Although this mascara is the most expensive of the three; it’s somewhere around $30, it’s definitely my favourite. I’ve also tried the regular waterproof DiorShow, and liked it too, but due to the extreme darkness of Blackout, I will always use it. It comes off nicely with my eye make-up remover, and yes, I still get the huge dark circles mess getting out of the shower, but not quite as bad since it’s not waterproof. The tube is very elegant as well. It’s black with shiny CD’s all over it.
Overall, DiorShow wins as the best mascara, however the other two are formidable if you’re on a tighter budget.
Another tip that I’ll add for those of you who also have straight boring lashes like me, heat up your eyelash curlers before using them. You can either run it under hot water for a minute or so, then quickly towel dry it before using, or, you can use your hair dryer on it for a few seconds(touch it to make sure it’s not TOO hot), then use it to curl your lashes before your mascara. This will make the world of a difference. Think of it as though you were curling your hair. Makes sense, no?
Enjoy,

[...] sounded like a really great invention, especially for someone like me with really straight lashes. If it’s something good enough for A-list celebrities, then surely it works [...]
