Blue Cheese Dressing, a Brand War

Posted by darleya

I discovered blue cheese dressing after having eaten chicken wings at Wild Wing here in Ottawa last year. Prior to this I’d never really considered it.

Since then I’ve eaten it a lot. With many different foods. I’m slightly obsessed you could say, or perhaps even addicted. It’s not for everyone, but, I love it!

I think I’ve made up for not having eaten it until up to a year ago, so I feel that I’m pretty qualified to judge the commercial versions. The two that I’ll be comparing are President’s Choice’s Blue Cheese dressing versus Renée’s Gourmet Chunky Blue Cheese.

President’s Choice Blue Cheese Dressing and Dip

The President’s Choice blue cheese dressing is available at all Loblaw companies and subsidiaries. It’s usually around 50 cents cheaper than Renée’s Gourmet. The jar is the identical shape and style as the Renée’s dressings. It’s the right creamy texture and tastes good. I do find the blue cheese chunks to be too small. They’re not very noticeable. I also find this dressing to have a bit too much lemon juice.

Renée’s Gourmet Chunky Blue Cheese

Renée’s Gourmet Chunky Blue Cheese dressing is usually for sale at $3.99. It can be found at the same spot as the president’s choice Blue Cheese dressing near the vegetables with the veggie dips at most grocery stores. Renée’s Chunky Blue Cheese is wonderfully chunky. Good chunks the size of dimes. The flavour is unbeatable, it’s the perfect blue cheese taste. I can’t seem to get enough of it. I eat it with whole wheat pita most of the time, but also use it as dipping sauce for pizza, carrots, green beans, and snow peas.

It’s not really difficult to see which one I prefer at this point. Renée’s Gourmet was the first to have this thick creamy dip on the shelves, and as such, they’re the best. I actually looked up the ingredients, and Renée’s Gourmet does not put any lemon juice in its dip while President’s Choice does. Renée’s is definitely worth the 50 cents, but if they’re all out of Renée’s I will still buy the President’s choice since I need my blue cheese fix. I’m gross to some of you. I know.
