Talisman board game

Posted by darleya

So last weekend I tried the board game Talisman, by Fantasy Flight.

I was reluctant at first, just because if you’ve played these types of games, it takes a while to go through the rules before you actually get to play. I’m one of those people that likes to get the minimal briefing, then learn as I play. My brother-in-law wanted to get EVERY detail out first. So an hour after the rules were explained; we played. And played. And played. The game was very entertaining, it’s sort of like that Magic card game. Not that I’ve ever played that, but I’m told it’s very similar. Essentially you play a character that has certain traits and abilities(like within an MMO), and you receive cards that represent different bonuses such as spells, or armour. I really enjoyed the game.

The only down side, is that there are three different levels on the board. To win the game you have to make it to the center of the middle level. The problem is that there are areas that shoot you back down to the first two levels. I had made plans for that evening, so approximately 4 hours in the game, I had to withdraw, yet I was ahead. The guys played for another full hour I’d say. The box says the gameplay is around an hour and a half long. NOT true. That’s where the game failed, because we’d get tired of having to nearly start over from the bottom level each time, almost like snakes and ladders but with categories and risks.

I would still play again. Here is a review from Board Game Geek:

  1. TALISMAN RULEZ!!!
    LOL!!!
I played the other day and finished a game in a little over 30 minutes… it just depends on what happens, luck of the dice roll and such… you can play a game where you have the worst luck and keep going in circles… but my last game, got to the end in 30-45minutes flat… played my gf and of course she didn’t like it (she lost)… the amount of players playing will also determine the amount of time spent… 2 players, I can’t see it going on for more than an hour…
Hopefully we’ll get a chance to try it again soon!

(PS – the one we played was the Fantasy Flight version, not the Black industries version…)

  2. An enjoyable Talisman game requires three things:
    1) The ability to see your possible move locations within a second of rolling the dice. This is easy since each side of the board, in the outer region anyway, is 6 spaces long.
    2) Players are paying attention so they take their turn immediately after the previous person finishes. A player’s turn in a normal session of this game will last approximately 10 seconds, unless there is combat. In that case, it will last 20 seconds.
    3) The right attitude. The game is not completely luck. There is decision making and strategy. You need to know when it is viable to enter the middle region and go for it. You can’t try to keep building up and getting super strong. If you have 9-10 strength/craft, you should be in the middle.
